The Australian Truffle

The Wine & Truffle Co began cultivation of the French Black Perigord Truffle at Hazel Hill Estate Manjimup in the South-West region of Western Australia in 1997. Today the company is the single largest producer of fresh Superior Perigord truffles in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 13,000 hazel and oak trees.

The first black truffle – a single 168 gram truffle - was discovered in July 2003. Since that time, the annual harvest has increased every year with an expectation of a harvest in excess of 2 tonnes for 2011.

Australian Truffle Production

Here in Australia, cultivating truffles is a unique and challenging experience that The Wine & Truffle Co has embraced with enthusiasm and passion. There are about 150 truffle growers in Australia, but only 6 growers produce over 90% of the crop.

Last year our company produced 50% of the Australian production, with our Tasmanian associate producing about 17%. With expectations of similar figures this year, we will market around 70% of the Australian crop. No other Australian producer will be able to supply as reliably as The Wine & Truffle Co and no other producer has the same high grading standards of the finest Superior Perigord Truffles.

The Australian truffle season runs from end May through to end August allowing for the supply of high quality Superior Perigord truffles throughout the Northern Hemisphere summer.

Truffle Exports from Australia

Working with a network of major distributors across the world, our harvested truffles are cleaned, washed and vacuum sealed using the latest technology and preservation methods to maintain their quality and aroma. They are then packed into a polystyrene container and forwarded to you.
